Today, social media networks like Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube, have replaced television and print, at least in terms of what people actually pay attention to. TV and print media combined aren’t nearly as powerful as the social media ads on your phone.
Intent-based marketing puts these powerful social media tools to work for you—for pennies. You can spend much less money and have a much bigger impact.
Observing Behavior to Understand Intent
Intent-based marketing uses information collected from an individual’s browsing or viewing behavior to determine the appropriate products or content to display. Put simply, people who consume your videos are showing they are interested in you and your products.
There are two simple steps to Intent-based marketing:
- Show people content that’s only interesting to people that probably want what you sell.
2. If they watch your content, show them more ads that sell what you’re offering.
That’s the short, simple version. Let’s go deeper.
Step #1 – Show people content that’s only interesting to people that probably want what you sell
Think about how you got to PeterSchmitz.com. Chances are, the first thing you ever saw from me was an ad or a video about marketing. Nobody would watch that unless they’re interested in marketing.
This Is How You Get Strangers to Tell You They’re Interested in
What You Sell
Step #2 – If they watch your content, show them more ads that sell what you’re offering.
Send three or more videos in this step, with a small ad budget. Maybe $5 – $10/day. Fewer ads will work too. It just takes longer to build a relationship.
Social Media Advertising is the
Single Biggest Opportunity in the History of Advertising
Let’s Look at the Math
On March 18th, 2020, I spent $54.40 showing this ad to total strangers who don’t know me. The targeted people were those that probably have businesses and were interested in digital marketing.
One Day:
%
Total Spend
Total people who watched 100% of the video
So, which do you want to do? Pay a TV network between $90 and $2,500 to show a 30 second ad one time to a bunch of totally un-targeted people who probably won’t see it in the first place?
Or, pay Facebook 1.82 cents to get a targeted person to watch an entire video about your business?
Obviously, it’s the second answer.
Take it from a guy with 40 years of direct response advertising experience: social media advertising is the single biggest opportunity in the history of advertising.

The beauty part is, your ad budget is smaller and more effective.
